YouTube released a new feature, YouTube Shots after Instagram copied TikTok with their Reels. Now YouTubers also introducing a short video format. In this article, we will take a look at how this new feature works, how you can use it, and why YouTube is copying TikTok.
youtube short videos that are less than 60 seconds long. And there's also a new tool for these YouTube Shorts that creates videos that are 15 or fewer seconds long. It is very similar to the videos, you know, from TikTok. YouTube released this new feature, including the new camera tools to a small group of Indian users first and is planning to roll it out to the whole of India and to the globe soon.
First, it's only available on Android, but it will be coming for you. As to why India first, you ask? Well, there are probably two reasons. First of all, it's a new mobile feature. And as India has a pretty big market of mobile users of YouTube, this might be one of the reasons. And second of all, this is probably the bigger one of the two reasons TikTok got banned in India. So YouTube is trying to fill in this gap. So like Instagram, YouTube is also seeing the opportunity to fight TikTok. And as TikTok might be banned or sold in the US very soon, there might be more markets that get this new YouTube features very soon.
YouTube has already announced that they will be rolling this feature out to more countries after India. India is just in the beta phase. They will roll it out and you can use it in any country and you can already create videos for this new Shorts feature, even if you're not an Indian creator. More on this later. But how does this new feature work exactly? There are two parts to this. First of all, users can now find videos that are less than 60 seconds long.
These YouTube Shorts prominently featured on the YouTube homepage. They get their own Shorts shelf. This is a row on your youtube mobile home page. And if you click on the Shorts, you can scroll vertically like you're used to on TikTok. And there will be new options to discover new of these short videos of very soon.
YouTube will keep us updated here. So there is the user side. And then there's the creative part. And there is the second part to this new feature. There is a new camera tool to create these YouTube Shorts that are just launching in India at the moment. With this new tool, you can create these short videos just using your smartphone. To do this click on the plus sign at the bottom of your YouTube app, then tap create a shot. A camera opens where you can switch between the front and back camera of your phone. And in the top right corner, you can find a few more controls.
First of all, you have the speed controls where you can choose to speed up or slow down your recording. Then you can add music. And this feature is connected to YouTube music, which gives you the possibility to already use more than 100000 tracks. And YouTube is working on expanding this library even further.
Next, you can find a timer where you can record hands-free and even set a stopping point to stop automatically. To record a clip, tap and hold the capture button or tap it to start recording and tap it again to end the segment. Similar to TikTok, you will see a timeline filling up on top of your screen.
You can record multiple segments like this that YouTube will make into one video. You can click the Undo button to remove the last video clip you recorded or the redo button to edit this removed video clip back to your video. After you finished recording, click next to preview your video and click next again to edit details to your video. You can put in a title like you're used to on YouTube and a couple of more settings like the audience.
If your videos specially made for kids. More on this in this video like you used to with a regular YouTube videos after you tap the upload button, you're finished and your youtube video will be published. Of course, a big question is, will my YouTube subscribers will be notified if I upload such a new YouTube Short? Yes, they are notified. Like if you upload a regular youtube video, it's pretty much the same thing. But they don't appear in the youtube subscription box yet.
This might be something that will be added in the future. But even if you're not from India and you don't have access to this new YouTube Shorts camera yet, you are still able to get your videos to appear in the YouTube Shorts sections of the viewers, because all YouTube videos that are less than 60 seconds long can appear in this new tape. And if you add the #Shorts to your video title or your video description, you have higher chances of appearing in these YouTube Shorts section.
This means you can even upload your TikTok videos or your Instagram Reels, like regular videos to your YouTube channel. Add this hashtag Shorts, and they might appear in these new Shorts shelf. All right. So this is how these new features work, but what does this mean for creators? Well, it gives you two new possibilities. First of all, the possibility to be discovered by this new feature as people can just scroll through these videos, you might be discovered by new viewers. And second of all, it gives you a new opportunity to connect to your audience with a new video format. And you don't even need to change the platform. You don't need to get all of your youtube subscribers to TikTok.
If you have a lot of subscribers, you can do pretty much the same thing on YouTube. And this brings us to the next point because they are pretty much the same thing, but they are not exactly the same thing. YouTube Shorts are very similar to TikTok videos or Instagram videos, but they don't have filters yet.
We saw that YouTube implemented filters into YouTube stories, so I'm pretty sure that we will see these filters in the YouTube Shorts as well. And YouTube has one big advantage, and this is that they already have a huge pool of videos and also a huge pool of short videos. And this might give them a heads up to, for example, Instagram, who are mainly a photo platform, not so much into videos. What do you think of this new feature? Do you think YouTube can steal the TikTok audience? Would you use this new feature or do you think this is just another hype like Vine was a couple of years ago and this will be over very soon? Let me know in the comments down below. I'm very interested in what you think. That's it for me. I hope you liked this quick update on this new YouTube feature.
